Bitter Nectar by MJWilliam Bitter Nectar by MJWilliam
I'm on a mission to finish all the oil paintings I began last year. Or was it two years ago? Crap, time flies.

Anyway, this is the completed version of this: [link] . One down, a dozen to go. This one was no picnic. Made me remember why I stopped painting on canvas and thinning my paints with linseed oil. Not only is it a pain, the scans look like crud. For which I apologize.

Methinks it's back to nice smooth illustration board and stinky chemicals for me! :evillaugh:

Oil on canvas, 11x14". Closeups: [link]

This piece is heavily rooted in Buddhism. The helmet is referenced partly from an ancient Buddhist statue, the jewel on her forehead is Buddhist, and the tattoo on her hand is the Endless Knot, one of the Eight Auspicious Signs, which symbolizes the unity of wisdom, great compassion, and the illusory character of time.

This illustration looks really beautiful! I really love how you did the colouring in her hair and the way how you did the tattooing in her body! You coloured her very well!

This is so beautiful. The highlights on her face, the jewelry, the shapes, everything. I love the bright blues you put in the piece and the skin tone is even throughout the painting, which is hard to do (Well, for some people haha).
I really love this.

this is truly beautiful :') I recently started with oil paint, but I've yet a long way to go before I can produce anything near this xD The only thing I can say is that left iris doesn't seem to be exactly round, but that's only a small thing. The skin is stunning and especially the tattoo's, they look look just as if they were put on real skin

She really seems to glow doesn't she? :]
Also, I love the blues in this. Beautiful piece.
I think the unfinished version actually looks really nice how it is as well.

Still being jealous of your talent. :P

Lovely work! There's so much detail in this, it comes across as so rich and full of flavour. (If "flavour" is the right word. I think hunger may be affecting my word choices =P)

I compared this with the "incomplete" version you linked in your description, and I'm actually having a hard time deciding which one I like more. It's hard to describe, but when I look at this I think of "culture" and "history"; whereas when I look at the incomplete version I think of "memory" and "emotion". I'm not even sure that makes sense, but I'm not sure how else to put it.

In any case, I think they are both fine pieces of work. Great job! :)

Stinky chemicals was the main reason I never could really get into oils. :D She's still lovely despite the canvas "noise" on the scan. :)

Thanks, Jolie! Actually, if you use odorless thinner and good ventilation you can eliminate the stink entirely. I kinda like the smell of the paints themselves. :)

In my tiny living conditions there's no way I could do it right now. I have nowhere to put canvases to keep the cat hair from getting to them. And, knowing my crazy cat, she'd go "Stinky!" and start trying to lick it. This is the same cat that used to lick photographs and the adhesives on tape and labels.

Maybe once I have a place of my own again and I can turn the whole living room into art working area I can try. I know they have all sorts of new types of oil now that dry faster, don't stink as much, etc.

My space is pretty small too. I keep the canvases on top of a bookshelf. My cats can't jump that high.

I also keep them behind an open door, but that's tricky, there should be enough room for a painting but not a cat... :)

:D That wouldn't work on my girl. I have folding doors on the closet and she knows how to open them. She's a smart, nosy old thing.
